Pioneer solution can eliminate use of permanent bauxite tailing dams

A new solution for storing dried tailings from Hydro’s bauxite mine in Brazil replaces the need for raising and building new dams, improving safety and environmental performances.

Hydro has invested around USD5.5 million in the testing stage of the methodology that allows for the final disposal of tailings in areas already mined, and has received an operating license from Semas, the Pará State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability at the end of 2020.

Das Jahr 2020 begann für die Schweizer Aluminiumindustrie ausgesprochen gut. Die Auslastung bewegte sich bei einigen Mitgliedsfirmen des Branchenverbandes alu.ch sogar auf Rekordniveau. Im Frühjahr bremste die Pandemie diesen positiven Trend jedoch jäh aus. Im dritten Quartal sorgte die rasch gestiegene Nachfrage in wichtigen Anwendermärkten wie der Automobilindustrie zwar für eine moderate Erholung. Insgesamt betrachtet brach die Produktion der Schweizer Walz- und Presswerke in 2020 jedoch gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 17 Prozent auf 189.200 Tonnen ein.

l BMW Group bezieht mit Solarstrom hergestelltes Aluminium

Die BMW Group bezieht ab sofort Aluminium, für dessen Herstellung Strom aus Sonnenenergie zum Einsatz kommt. Für den Autobauer ein wichtiger Schritt, mit dem das Unternehmensziel erreicht werden soll, die CO 2 -Emissionen im Lieferantennetzwerk bis 2030 um 20 Prozent zu senken. Da die Herstellung von Aluminium sehr energieintensiv ist, hat der Einsatz von regenerativer Energie, wie Solarstrom, erhebliches Potenzial bei der Reduzierung der CO 2 -Emissionen. Daher plant die BMW Group auch langfristig, mit erneuerbaren Energiequellen hergestelltes Aluminium zu beziehen. In den nächsten zehn Jahren sollen so rund 2,5 Mio. Tonnen CO 2 -Emissionen eingespart werden. Das entspricht ca. drei Prozent der selbst gesetzten CO 2 -Ziele für das Lieferantennetzwerk.

After each change of alloy, and also after every shift, a clean-out block should be used to remove the build-up of oxide skin from the liner of the container. The cleanout block is pushed through a heated container by the dummy block and should remove all the aluminium left on the inner bore of the liner after repeated extrusion cycles. l Integriertes Prozessmodell für die induktive Bolzenerwärmung

Bei Anlagen zur induktiven Bolzenerwärmung herkömmlicher Bauart werden Andrückthermoelemente zur Steuerung des Prozesses verwendet. Mit ihnen wird die Oberflächentemperatur an verschiedenen Positionen gemessen und damit die elektrisch induzierte Leistung geregelt. Diese Thermoelemente sind jedoch ungenau und wartungsintensiv. Insbesondere in radialer Richtung ist nichts über die Temperaturverteilung im Bolzen bekannt. Dies führt zu einer schlechten Wiederholgenauigkeit des Prozesses, was die Betreiber von Strangpressanlagen immer wieder vor Probleme stellt. Die Otto Junker GmbH hat zusammen mit der Prosik GmbH und der Constellium Singen GmbH ein integriertes Prozessmodell entwickelt. Das Modell berechnet anhand der Leistungsaufnahme der Induktionsspulen die Verteilung der Leistungsdichte im Bolzen. Anhand dessen wird die Temperaturverteilung im Bolzen mittels Finite-Volumen-Methode ermittelt. Dieses wird für die optimale Regelung der elektrischen Leistung verwendet. Mithilfe dieses digitalen Zwillings kann die Wiederholgenauigkeit und die Stabilität des Prozesses verbessert werden.

In production operations whose plants have to cope with frequent product changes, flexible adapting of the equipment is of prime importance. In a press shop that mainly produces automobile components, the rapid supply of complex tools weighing up to seven tonnes to the presses is paramount. The use of stackable racks enables an improvement of 50 percent in the utilization of the height of the workshops compared with a stacker-operated high-bay warehouse. The use of barcodes on the racks, together with connection to the AV or ERP software makes it possible to supply the tools fully automatically and just-in-time to where they are to be used.

l Doppelte Standzeit durch geringen Verschleiß

Ein entscheidender Faktor für die Prozesseffizienz bei der Metallverarbeitung ist die Standzeit der Werkzeuge. Müssen Werkzeuge wegen hohem Verschleiß häufig ausgetauscht werden, steigen die Produktionskosten durch Stillstände der Maschinen. Um den Verschleiß zu reduzieren und dadurch die Standzeiten von Werkzeugen zu erhöhen, haben die Experten der K.-H. Müller Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH die neue Werkzeugbeschichtung MC 3100 entwickelt. Tests haben dabei gezeigt, dass die Werkzeuge mit der neuen Beschichtung doppelt so viele Bohrungen durchführen können wie vergleichbare Werkzeuge.

l Besser kleben im Leichtbau: Projekt GoHybrid optimiert Hybridverbindungen

Leichtbau ist aus der Mobilitätsbranche nicht mehr wegzudenken. Im Zuge der Mischbauweise mit Leichtmetallen und Faser-Kunststoff-Verbunden rücken nun hybride Klebverbindungen in den Fokus. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Wärmeausdehnungen der Materialien kann es dort bei großen Temperaturdifferenzen zu hohen Eigenspannungen und somit zum Versagen im Klebstoff kommen. Vor allem bei Verbindungen unter hohen strukturellen Lasten lassen sich diese Eigenspannungen nur bedingt durch die Wahl des Klebstoffs ausgleichen. Daher ist es notwendig, die Gestaltungsparameter der Verbindung und der Fügepartner gesamtheitlich zu betrachten. Das Fraun-hofer-Institut für Betriebsfestigkeit und Systemzuverlässigkeit LBF untersucht dies gemeinsam mit Partnern in dem im Frühjahr 2020 gestarteten Forschungsprojekt GoHybrid.

Zunehmend schärfere gesetzliche Emissionsgrenzwerte drängen die Automobilindustrie zu innovativen Leichtbaulösungen. In diesem Kontext gewinnt die Schwingfestigkeit von gefügten Feinblechverbindungen, insbesondere an Multimaterialverbindungen, an Bedeutung. Im Rahmen des von der EU geförderten Forschungsprojektes „Alliance“ hat der Autohersteller Opel zusammen mit dem Fraunhofer-Institut für Betriebsfestigkeit und Systemzuverlässigkeit LBF und dem Fachgebiet SAM der TU Darmstadt innovative numerische Methoden auf Basis von Schwingfestigkeitsversuchen von Scherzug- und Schälzugproben zur Lebensdauerabschätzung für Multi-Material-Fügetechniken entwickelt. Die Validierung der Methode erfolgte durch das Fraunhofer LBF mit Schwingfestigkeitsversuche an bauteilähnlichen Tellerproben mit der Materialpaarung Stahl-Aluminium.
