Der Energieversorger EDF und Trimet Aluminium haben jüngst einen neuen Stromvertrag für die Aluminiumhütte in Frankreich abgeschlossen. Die Vereinbarung setzt die seit 2013 bestehende Zusammenarbeit beider Partner fort und sichert die Energieversorgung der Trimet-Hütte in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne im Umfang von insgesamt 22 Terawattstunden für die kommenden zehn Jahre. Der Vertrag sieht flexible Komponenten vor, die für eine ausgewogene Verteilung von Risiken und Vorteilen sorgen.

l Aluminium foil deliveries down to pre-pandemic levels in Q1

Following a long period of higher levels of demand for aluminium foil, due to inventory building and pandemic related demand from consumers, trading has returned to levels last seen in 2020. Deliveries from European rollers dipped by 3.3% in the first quarter of 2023 year on year but are only marginally less than before the pandemic at 231,700 tonnes, according to figures released by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA).

l Amcor and Aludium collaborate on low-carbon product for screw caps

Rolled products manufacturer Aludium and Amcor Capsules, a producer of closures for wine and spirits, are collaborating to bring an aluminium product to market with more than 50% reduction in carbon footprint compared to the average carbon footprint for primary aluminium sold in Europe. When compared to primary aluminium produced in China, it represents an average carbon footprint reduction of more than 80%.*

l Russian aluminium becomes a problem for the LME

Aluminium from Russia becomes a problem for the world’s largest metal exchange, London’s LME. The still ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine affects the aluminium market increasingly. This becomes most visible in Europe as well as parts of Asia. In both areas, industrial consumers increasingly tend to shun Russian aluminium. Russia’s number one aluminium producer, Rusal, is suffering particularly from this tendency. Quite a lot of Russian aluminium which cannot be sold to former industrial customers, is now being put into the metal warehouses of the London Metal Exchange.

l New study: electrification of cars drives aluminium usage

A recent study commissioned by European Aluminium (EA) and conducted by Ducker Carlisle has found that the average amount of aluminium used in European cars has increased by 17.8% from 174 to 205 kg in the 2019-2022 period. The study predicts this trend is set to continue, with the average aluminium content projected to increase to 237 kg per vehicle by 2026 and 256 kg per vehicle by 2030 (+15.6% and +24.9% respectively, compared to 2022).

l Novelis investiert in Solarpark und Wasserstoffprojekt

l SMS group mit deutlichem Plus bei Auftragseingang und Umsatz

SMS group blickt auf ein erfolgreiches Geschäftsjahr 2022. Der Maschinenund Anlagenbauer konnte seinen Auftragseingang um gut 31 Prozent auf 4,6 Mrd. Euro erneut deutlich steigern. Haupttreiber für diese starke Entwicklung waren die grüne Transformation der Stahl- und Metallindustrie sowie eine gute Konjunktur in Indien und in den USA. Der Auftragsbestand konnte um fast 40 Prozent auf 5,5 Mrd. Euro gesteigert werden. Der Gesamtumsatz legte deutlich auf 3,1 Mrd. Euro (+22,6%) zu. Im Rahmen der Messe Metec 2023 konnte SMS group zudem einen neuen Auftrag über zwei Aluminium-Walzwerke verkünden.

In June, US Senator Tom Cotton (Rep-Arkansas), along with six of his colleagues, sent a bipartisan letter to the Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, urging the administration to revise tariff exclusion rules previously approved for aluminium extrusion products. The letter details how these Exclusion Rules have imposed unnecessary and unfair burdens on domestic aluminium manufacturers and facilitated a damaging surge of foreign imports.

Hydro has produced the world’s first successful batch of aluminium using green hydrogen as an energy source. The test is another step towards carbon-free aluminium. Carbon-free green hydrogen replaced natural gas as fuel for the recycling of aluminium during the test. The test was carried out at a casthouse in Hydro’s extrusion plant in Navarra, Spain.

l DTE delivers a molten-metal chemical analyzer to Sintef for aluminium melt research

DTE, the leading innovator in real-time process intelligence from liquid aluminium, achieved a significant milestone in May 2023 by delivering an advanced molten metal analyzer to Sintef in Trondheim, Norway. l Power to Heat – effiziente Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien zur Wärme- und Stromversorgung

Otto Junker, ein führender Hersteller von Gießerei- und Thermoprozessanlagen, präsentierte auf der Fachmesse Gifa /Thermprocess im Juni in Düsseldorf das in Kooperation mehrerer Industrieunternehmen entstandene Hochtempe-ratur-Wärmespeichersystem multiTess. Die Anlage ermöglicht eine flexible und effiziente Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien zur Wärme- und Stromversorgung von Industrie- und Gewerbebetrieben.

l Projektbericht: Optimierte Dämmung von Wärmebehandlungsanlagen

Die verschleißbedingt notwendige neue Ausmauerung von zwei Industrieöfen bot der Aichelin Service GmbH Ende 2022 die Gelegenheit, die Wärmedämmung der Anlagen gemeinsam mit dem Kunden grundlegend zu optimieren. Bereits in der Vergangenheit hatte das Unternehmen vergleichbare Projekte an eigenen Anlagen im Werk des Kunden in Gaggenau erfolgreich umgesetzt. Im aktuellen Projekt stand nun die Neuausmauerung der Wärmebehandlungsanlagen eines anderen Herstellers im Fokus.

l Eine Servopresse „wie aus einem Guss“

Eine Coil-Breite von max. 1.300 mm mit Zick-Zack-Vorschub und Restbandverarbeitung, eine Richtmaschine mit wechselbaren Richtkassetten und ein Werkzeugwechselwagen für die Presse zur Minimierung der Rüstzeiten: Mit Besonderheiten wie diesen kann die Schuler-Servopresse aufwarten, die das Unternehmen Wöhrle an seinem Produktionsstandort in Krautheim bei Heilbronn installiert hat. Die vielfältige Anlage vom Typ MSD 1000 mit einer Tischabmessung von 4.000 auf 1.800 mm sorgt dadurch für die nötige Flexibilität für den Automobilzulieferer, um auf dem Markt erfolgreich zu sein.

l AP&T modernisiert Schmiedelinie für Aluminiumteile

Raufoss Technology aus Norwegen hat AP&T mit der Aufrüstung einer der bestehenden Schmiedelinien zur Herstellung von Aluminiumteilen beauftragt. Der Auftrag umfasst eine speziell gefertigte Biegemaschine und eine neue hydraulische Presse mit einer Presskraft von 2.500 Tonnen. Die modernisierte Anlage soll bis Januar 2024 in Betrieb gehen.

The plant will provide 70 new, local jobs once completed in Q4 2023, and strengthen Hydro’s recycling capabilities in the USA in support of automotive innovation. The project is a key step in the company’s ambition to double recycling of post-consumer aluminium by 2025.

l SDE Technology’s press investment boosts UK’s auto sector

SDE Technology in the UK is installing an impressive 1,000-tonne Chin Fong press and coil handling line at its Brixton Way factory in Shrewsbury. This latest equipment technology will enable the application of larger dies that particularly enable forming larger aluminium components for the automotive industry. The entire investment required for the project is some £2m, including for primary upgrades required.

l New alliance to use HFQ technology for OEM parts

Coventry, UK’s Impression Technologies Ltd (ITL) and EMI Aerospace from Michigan have formed a licensing and technical services agreement to develop advanced aluminium using Hot Form Quench (HFQ) technology for global aerospace markets.

l Audubon Metals to commercialize Ohio State green alloy technology

In the US, Ohio State University and Audubon Metals have formed a licensing agreement to advance commercialization of technology that could increase manufacturing usage of recycled aluminium alloys which can cost half as much and require a fraction of the energy compared with new mined smelted metal. A joint research team has developed a production route for secondary alloy that meets the high integrity standards of structural diecasting applications.

l Gießereikolloquium – Innovative Entwicklungen im Druckguss

Auf dem diesjährigen Aalener Gießereikolloquium informierten sich mehr als 240 Vertreter der Gießereibranche über innovative Entwicklungen im Druckguss. l Shandong Nanshan bestellt Kaltwalzwerk bei Primetals

Im März dieses Jahres erteilte Shandong Nanshan Aluminium einen Auftrag an Primetals Technologies für ein neues Kaltwalzwerk mit Universal Crown Control-Technologie (UCM). Die Anlage mit einer Jahreskapazität von 180.000 Tonnen wird am Standort Longkou in der Provinz Shandong im östlichen Teil Chinas errichtet.

l Mercedes-Benz bringt CO 2 -reduziertes Aluminium in Serie

Nur wenige Monate nach der Ankündigung einer Technologiepartnerschaft mit dem Aluminiumhersteller Hydro im Dezember 2022 präsentiert Mercedes-Benz erste Ergebnisse seiner Roadmap für kohlenstoffarme Technologien. Nach Abschluss einer erfolgreichen Testphase mit CO 2 -armem Aluminium mit einem Mindestanteil von 25 Prozent Post-Consumer-Schrott bringt der Premium-Autohersteller noch in diesem Jahr anspruchsvolle Strukturgussbauteile für den Rohbau aus dem umweltfreundlicheren Material in die Serienproduktion. Das getestete Aluminium weist einen ökologischen Fußabdruck von 2,8 kg CO 2 pro kg Aluminium auf.

Look around – there are more and more battery electric vehicles on the roads. And more aluminium, too. By 2035, according to Goldman Sachs Research, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will make up around half of new car sales worldwide. Much of that growth is driven by regulation. Many governments plan to phase out sales of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as soon as 2030, while several manufacturers have pledged to sell only zero-emissions new cars and vans by 2040. It is a healthy trend, as BEVs help fight climate change.
